Medea is a tragic play by the brilliant Greek playwright Euripedes. Euripedes is known for writing his plays more realistically than his ancestors. He would even make fun of some of the writings of older playwrights. His tragedy, Medea, is about a woman who found out that her husband, Jason, is planning on marrying another woman. He does not keep it a secret; everyone knows about that marriage and almost everyone is supporting him. Medea’s husband is claiming that he is only marrying the King’s daughter so that he ensures a good future for their children, because they would be half-siblings to royal blood. Medea is not convinced of course, but she lies to him and tells him that she understands completely and is supportive. Her grief possessed her and she decided she would take revenge. She sent her children with gifts to the princess, claiming that these gifts are a sign of apology and a request for a new start. The princess was not conviced at first and was afraid of touching those gifts, but her fiance told her that Medea is completely supportive of their marriage now and would never do anything to hurt any of them. The princess was right not to trust Medea – apparently, both women are much smarter than Jason. The gifts were poisened, and once she put them on, the poison started taking its toll on her. When her father, the king, learned what happened, he rushed in to try and save his daughter, but he could not. And it was not just that, the poison killed the king as well as he touched his daughter while trying to save her life. When Jason saw what happened, he ran back to Medea to blame her for what happened. As he was denied entrance to her house, he had to stand outside and hear the horrific thing that Medea did. She decided she would continue her revenge and what she did was downright crazy! Thank God, all the murders took place inside the house where the audience and the readers do not get to witness the horror first hand. One of the most tragic tragedies, but you can’t miss it!
