قد يبدو للقارىء أن "ولسن كيرولس" مؤلف هذا الكتاب خبيرا تربويا أوروبيا والكتاب مترجم، لكن الحقيقة ليست كذلك، فالكاتب مصري الأم والأب والنشأة، والكتاب مؤلف باللغة العربية وموجه للطالب المصري والعربي، والمؤلف كان يعمل اخصائيا اجتماعيا في وزارة التربية والتعليم المصرية، وبحكم عمله اطلع على مشكلات الطلاب عبر سنوات العمل الطويلة واكتشف تشابها كبيرا بينها، وتبين له أن أغلبها مرتبط بالمذاكرة والامتحان، كذلك تمكن من الربط بين المشكلات الدراسية التي يعانيها الطالب من ناحية، وبين ظروفه الخاصة من النواح الاقتصادية والصحية والاجتماعية من جهة أخرى.

 فهو إذن شاهد عيان على تلك المشكلة بتطوراتها ومظاهر تكرارها، كما أن بحثه فيها يعتبر ميدانيا، فقد كان في خضم المشكلة وساحتها، بين طلبة المدارس التي تنقل بينها طوال فترة عمله الوظيفي كأخصائي اجتماعي، أما هدفه من تأليف كتابه فقد حدده هو نفسه : " حتى يكون مرشداً لأبنائنا من الطلاب ومساعداً لإخواننا من الآباء والأمهات والمدرسين، ولتحقيق التعاون بين الجميع ".
