لم يكن حظ "التوحيدي" بعد وفاته بأحسن من حظه في حياته، فقد عجب ياقوت من أن مؤرخي الرجال لم يترجموا له مع أنه فيلسوف الأدباء وأديب الفلاسفة، ولم نعثر فيما بين أيدينا من الكتب على ترجمة وافية لحياته إلا نُتفًا قصيرة وأخبارًا ضئيلة.

وأراد هو أن ينتقم من الناس الذين كفروا صنيعه وجحدوا علمه وأدبه، فأحرق في آخر أيامه كتبه وقال: «إني جمعت أكثرها للناس ولطلب المثالة منهم، ولعقد الرياسة بينهم، ولمد الجاه عندهم، فحُرمتُ ذلك كله … ولقد اضطُرِرت بينهم بعد العشرة والمعرفة في أوقات كثيرة إلى أكل الخضر في الصحراء، وإلى التكفف الفاضح عند الخاصة والعامة، وإلى بيع الدين والمروءة، وإلى تعاطي الرياء بالسمعة والنفاق، وإلى ما لا يحسن بالحر أن يرسمه بالقلم، ويطرح في قلب صاحبه الألم.»
