رواية فريدة في تكوينها، قُوامها الكثير من الحكايات التي تبدو للوهلة الأولى كأنها وحدات سردية قائمة بذاتها، غير أنها تتضافر مع توالي الصفحات بحيث ترتسم صورةٌ للحارة، أو للعالَم كما يراه محفوظ، مرسومًا من عينَي طفل نشأ في الحارة وخَبِر شخوصها وأحوالها. حكايات تبدأ بتكيَّة الدراويش بغموضهما ورمزيتها، وتنتهي إليها من جديد بعدما تمُرُّ على أبناء الحارة وتسرد حكاياتهم المدهشة. قيل إن محفوظ بدأ في كتابتها ككتاب مستوحًى من سيرته الذاتية وخِبرته الشخصية، ثم حدا بها أو حدت به إلى آفاق الخيال والتأمُّل الأكثر براحًا. تم تحويلها لعمل مسرحي بنفس العنوان عام 1990.
