The book "The Pursuit of Justice" provides a new entry to the study of the history of the modern Egyptian state by tracing the developments witnessed by medicine and law in the nineteenth century, based on the abundant records kept at the National Documentation House in Cairo. The book presents the methods developed by the Egyptian state to control the bodies of its subjects, as well as the many methods used by the people to circumvent these policies or not to use them in pursuit of justice.The book deals with the five phases of establishing the medical service and public health policies, such as dissection and application of quarantine, vaccination against smallpox, and the methods that applied Sharia law in Sharia courts, policy councils, and city planning policies. And the role of the hisbah in controlling the markets, in addition to the punitive policy, including what it includes in terms of retribution, imprisonment and torture, and by taking the human body as a unit for analysis. The Quest for Justice presents a comprehensive picture of the manner in which a distinctive Egyptian modernity was established in the nineteenth century.
