رواية نفسية فريدة بين مجمل أعمال محفوظ، تحوَّل فيها إلى الغوص في أعماق النفس البشرية والتفتيش في خباياها الدفينة، مرتكزًا على شخصية «كامل رؤبة لاظ» والبيئة النفسية والاجتماعية التي نشأ فيها فنتج عنها أزمته النفسية والسلوكية، بدايةً من طفولته وعلاقته بأمه التي طُلِّقت من أبيه العربيد، وفقدَت ابنَيها الآخرَين اللذَين وُضِعا تحت وصاية طليقها، ما جعلها ترتبط بابنها كامل لدرجة مَرَضية، فصار الأخير أسيرًا لعلاقته بأمه موصومًا بالخجل الشديد والرهاب الاجتماعي، فاقدًا للثقة عاجزًا عن مواجهة المجتمع ومتطلبات الحياة. نُشرت الرواية عام 1948 وانتقلت لشاشة السينما عام 1970.
