Blu-ray discs get their name from the technology using blue laser. The reason the laser is blue is its shorter wavelength. The wavelength of the blue laser is 405 nm, unlike the wavelength of the red laser, which is 650 nm and is used to write to DVDs. The advantage of a blue laser with a shorter wavelength means that it is possible to write smaller spirals of data, thus increasing the amount of data on the disk.
