Mechanism of action of Varenicline

• Varenicline blocks the ability of nicotine to activate α4β2 receptors and thus to stimulate the central nervous mesolimbic dopamine system, believed to be the neuronal mechanism underlying reinforcement and reward experienced upon smoking.

Therapeutic Indications of Champix

• For the relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms and as an aid to smoking cessation.

Method of Administration of Champix

• Begin taking varenicline as directed by your doctor, 1 to 2 weeks before the quit date.

• Take one 0.5-milligram tablet once a day for 3 days, then increase to one 0.5-milligram tablet twice a day for 4 days.

• The dose is slowly increased to lessen the chance of side effects (such as nausea, unusual dreams).

• Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
• If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
• Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Undesirable Side Effects of Champix

• Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:

• It can cause sleeplessness and difficulty concentrating, decreased heart rate and increased appetite or weight gain.

• The most common side-effect associated with Champix is nausea.

• Other common side effects include headache, difficulty sleeping and abnormal dreams. Champix may produce dizziness and sleepiness.
