Mechanism Of Action Of Losartan

• Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to constrict.
• As a result, losartan relaxes the blood vessels. This lowers blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart.

Therapeutic Indications Of Sortiva 50 Mg Tablets

• Treatment of patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults, children and adolescents 6 - 18 years of age.
• Protect the kidney in hypertensive type 2 diabetic patients with laboratory evidence of impaired renal function and proteinuria ≥ 0.5 g per day (a condition in which urine contains an abnormal amount of protein).
• Treatment of patients with chronic heart failure when therapy with specific medicines called angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors, medicine used to lower high blood pressure) is not considered suitable by your doctor.
• If your heart failure has been stabilized with an ACE inhibitor you should not be switched to losartan.
• Treatment of patients with high blood pressure and a thickening of the left ventricle, Losartan has been shown to decrease the risk of stroke

Method Of Administration Of Sortiva 50 Mg Tablets

• The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.
• You should try to take your daily dose at about the same time each day.
• You must continue to take Losartan until your doctor tells you otherwise.
• Treatment usually starts with 50 mg losartan (one tablet Losartan 50 mg) once a day.
• The blood pressure-lowering effect should be reached 3-6 weeks after beginning treatment.
• In some patients, the dose may later be increased to 100 mg losartan (two tablets Losartan 50 mg) once daily.
• Losartan is not recommended for use in children under 6 years old, as it has not been shown to work in this age group.
• Children aged 6 - 18 years old: The recommended starting dose in patients who weigh between 20 and 50 kg is 0.7 mg of losartan per kg of body weight administered once a day
• The doctor may increase the dose if blood pressure is not controlled.
• Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
• If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.

• Common:
• Dizziness
• Low blood pressure (especially after excessive loss of water from the body within blood vessels e.g. In patients with severe heart failure or under treatment with high dose diuretics)
• Dose-related orthostatic effects such as lowering of blood pressure appear when rising from a lying or sitting position
• Debility
• Fatigue
• Too little sugar in the blood (hypoglycemia)
• Too much potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia)
• Changes in kidney function including kidney failure
• Reduced number of red blood cells (anemia)
• Increase in blood urea serum creatinine and serum potassium in patients with heart failure.
• Uncommon:
• Somnolence
• Headache
• Sleep disorders
• A feeling of increased heart rate (palpitations)
• Severe chest pain (angina pectoris)
• Shortness of breath (dyspnoea)
• Abdominal pain
• Obstipation
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Hives (urticaria).

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Precautions While Taking Sortiva 50 Mg Tablets

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Non-Pharmacological Treatments & Advice To Reduce Blood Pressure

• To measure blood pressure correctly:

1. Don’t eat or drink anything 30 minutes before you take your blood pressure.
2. Empty your bladder before your reading.
3. Sit in a comfortable chair with your back supported for at least 5 minutes before your reading.
4. Put both feet flat on the ground and keep your legs uncrossed.
5. Rest your arm with the cuff on a table at chest height.
6. Make sure the blood pressure cuff is snug but not too tight. The cuff should be against your bare skin, not over clothing.
7. Do not talk while your blood pressure is being measured.

Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Sortiva 50 Mg Tablets

• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Losartan:

1. if you have had a history of angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat, and/or tongue)
2. if you suffer from excessive vomiting or diarrhea leading to an extreme loss of fluid and/or
3. salt in your body
4. if you receive diuretics (medicines that increase the amount of water that you pass out through your kidneys) or are under dietary salt restriction leading to an extreme loss of fluid and salt in your body
5. if you are known to have narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels leading to your kidneys or if you have received a kidney transplant recently
6. if your liver function is impaired
7. if you suffer from heart failure with or without renal impairment or concomitant severe life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Special caution is necessary when you are treated with a beta-blocker concomitantly
8. if you have problems with your heart valves or heart muscle
9. if you suffer from coronary heart disease (caused by a reduced blood flow in the blood vessels of the heart) or from cerebrovascular disease (caused by reduced blood circulation in the brain)
10. if you suffer from primary hyperaldosteronism (a syndrome associated with increased secretion of the hormone aldosterone by the adrenal gland, caused by an abnormality within the gland)
11. if you are taking any of the following medicines used to treat high blood pressure: an ACEinhibitor, aliskiren.

• Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

Storage Conditions Of Sortiva 50 Mg Tablets

• Store below 25°c
• Don’t refrigerate
• Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
• Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.

Normal Ranges

• Normal: Blood pressure numbers of less than 120/80 mm Hg
• Elevated: is when readings consistently range from 120-129 systolic and less than 80 mm Hg diastolic.
• Hypertension Stage 1: is when blood pressure consistently ranges from 130-139 systolic or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic.
• Hypertension Stage 2: is when blood pressure consistently ranges at 140/90 mm Hg or higher.
• Hypertensive crisis: This stage of high blood pressure requires medical attention. If your blood pressure readings suddenly exceed 180/120 mm Hg, wait five minutes and then test your blood pressure again. If your readings are still unusually high, contact your doctor immediately. You could be experiencing a hypertensive crisis.
