Yohimbe has been one of the most popular supplements for men and women for years. When ingested, the body converts it to yohimbine and assimilates it into the bloodstream. Yohimbine, an alkaloid, is the primary active ingredient of yohimbe. Why should you take Yohimbe? Its popularity has been ignited not only by its effects as an aphrodisiac, but also new research that shows it could be an herb with very effective antioxidant potential. Research shows it is a vasodilator, which means that it increases blood flow to the extremities and appendages. In another study involving 48 men experiencing impotence, 46% reported improvement in sexual functioning, and in a Stanford University study on Yohimbe, the subjects experienced 90% increase in sexual desire in less than one hour. Finally, in an older, 1977 german study done on Yohimbe using 86 patients with erectile dysfunction, 30mg of yohimbe was administered each day for eight weeks. 71% of the participants responded positively with an overall improvement in sexual function and libido. How much should be taken? Are there any side effects? People taking yohimbe should avoid foods containing tyramine, such as cheese, red wine, or liver. Tyramine is a substance contained in foods such as cheese, liver, and red wine. These foods should not be consumed while taking yohimbe. Also, antidepressants such as Prozac should be taken in combination with yohimbe only under the close supervision of a physician.
