How to change your own oil

  1. Before we start, please read through points 12 and 13 below.
  2. What you'll need before you start your oil change: sufficient quantity of the appropriate engine oil, new oil filter, oil drain pan, medium sized funnel, container for used engine oil, oil filter removal tool, socket to loosen sump, plus car jack and axle stands or car ramps and lastly a rag.
  3. Warm engine and oil: Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached and switch off. Warm oil will drain more effectively and assist in the removal of any built up sludge.
  4. Raise and secure car: Raise and secure vehicle on a level surface using either the jack & stands or the ramps. Ensure that the handbrake is on and the wheels are chocked.
  5. Drain old oil: Place the drain pan underneath the sump. Note that the oil will spout away from the sump plug. Note also that the hot oil can burn you. Use the correct size socket to remove sump plug. Allow oil to completely drain from vehicle. REPLACE sump plug, tighten firmly but not too tight.
  6. Remove oil filter: Place the drain pan under the filter, using the oil filter removal tool, remove the oil filter. Allow oil to drain from filter hole.
  7. Install new oil filter: Rub a smear of new oil over the oil filter gasket and then screw into location. Hand tighten and then give a small tweak with oil filter tool.
  8. Refill oil: Check quantity of oil required from owners manual. Remove oil filler cap from top of engine. Place funnel in hole and slowly pour three quarters of the oil into engine. You will need to stop periodically to allow oil to settle and air to escape. When three quarters of the oil has been poured, check the dipstick. Repeat until the correct level is achieved on the dipstick.
  9. Check oil level: Start the engine and allow to run for 1 minute. Wait 5 minutes and then check dipstick. If required add oil until the top level is reached on the dipstick. Do not overfill. Run engine and check dipstick again. If satisfactory, check engine for any leaks or spills.
  10. Dispose of old oil: Carefully pour used oil into appropriate container and seal. Check with your local authorities about the disposal of used oil. Most waste recycling centres will accept used oil from households.
  11. Re-check oil level: periodically check your oil level on the dipstick to ensure optimum engine protection.
  12. Refer to your vehicle service manual for correct oil grade, change interval and change procedure for your vehicle. The oil change guide provided is for informational purposes only, and is not intended for any specific vehicle make and model. Always refer to the vehicle service manual or owner's manual for correct oil change procedure including all safety precautions.
  13. Valvoline shall not be liable for any damages or costs of any type arising out of incorrect or wrong installation (outside the manufacturers guidelines and procedure). It is the responsibility of the end user to follow the vehicle manufacturers guide lines including warranty requirements and to ensure that all safety precaution are adhered to, in accordance to the vehicle manufacture and the equipment used.
