"Literature for English" is a five-book literature-based reading program for students who need to improve their basic English skills. Each book is packed with high-interest stories by famous writers covering varied genres such as folktale, science fiction, and autobiography. Selections in the Beginning- and Intermediate-level books are divided into a number of short, illustrated sections. Many of the chapters in the Advanced-level books contain theme-related stories and poems. Each section in the Student Book is followed by a comprehensive four-part skills check that is developed to meet the needs to LEP readers and is consistent with the general scope and sequence of ESL/ELT curricula. The Literature for English Teacher's Guides contains detailed instructions and activities for each reading selection in the student books. Complete pre- and post-reading activities and answers to all the student exercises are included. Two placement tests are also included - one in the Beginning and Intermediate One guides and the other in the Intermediate Two and Advanced guides. The teaching material for each unit contains: Warming Up that develops vocabulary, activates prior knowledge, and introduces the selection using graphic organizers, critical thinking, and language across the curriculum; Reading the Selection that guides students through the material in small, easy-to-digest sections with modeling strategies, graphic organizers, and critical thinking; Check Your Understanding that contains the answers to the student comprehension check; Understanding the Story that provides suggestions for teaching the grammar highlighted in the exercises; Studying the Story and Thinking About Literature that expands these sections in the student books; and, Assessment that checks vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension.
