تدور الرواية حول تجربة الاعتقال فى المعسكر الأمريكى الشهير “جوانتانامو” من خلال سيرة شاب عشرينى يعيش فى أسوان بعيداً عن أسرته المقيمة فى أم درمان، وأثناء عمله فى الإرشاد السياحى يقع فى حب فتاة سكندرية تعيش فى حى “كرموز” الشعبى، زارت الأقصر وأسوان فى رحلة جامعية، ثم تتطور أحداث الرواية مع نكسة السياحة بمصر، بعد مذبحة الدير البحرى بالأقصر، واضطرار الشاب إلى السفر إلى الخليج، ومنه إلى أوزبكستان، ثم أفغانستان، حيث اعتقله الجيش الأمريكى وسجنه فى معتقل جوانتانامو. وفى خلفية الأحداث الروائية، يظهر “أسامة بن لادن”، زعيم القاعدة، ولكن بصورة أخرى غير تلك التى اشتهرت عنه فى وسائل الإعلام، وتبدأ الرواية باقتباس من ابن النفيس، نصه “وأما الأخبار التى بأيدينا الآن، فإنما نتَّبع فيها غالب الظن، لا العلم المحقق”.
