Scenically and architecturally, Nottingham is one of the most remarkable of English cities. A major commercial centre in the Middle Ages, it subsequently become an important industrial city until well into the twentieth century. Nottingham has more recently been a city in transition, with service industries, apartments, shops, bars and restaurants colonizing the former palaces of industry and generating a wave of new design.
