The Scarlet Letter is a by the American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was written in the nineteenth century, yet it is set in seventeenth century Massachusetts, Colonized America. America was at the time following the Puritan religious movement. In a descriptive, vivid language, Hawthorne narrates the story of a young woman called Hester who conceived a baby girl out of an adulterous affair. Hester was married to a man who was supposed to follow her to America. Years passed, and he hasn’t and was even believed to be dead. Hester fell in love with someone else and they had an affair. As her pregnancy and child could not be hidden, the society learned about Hester’s crime – or sin, since it is an extremely religious and strict society – and punished her for it; however, her partner in crime was not discovered out, and she would not say his name out of the love she bears for him. Her punishment was to weave the letter “A” on her clothes and stand for three whole hours on the scaffold in front of every single person in town. Hester had to face all those judging eyes by herself, yet she would not give in to them that easily, she decided that she would face them in her attire of “shame” wearing the most elegantly and fantastically embroidered “A” on her dress. Embracing her sign of shame, Hester stood holding her child for the longest, most humiliating three hours if her life until her eyes fell on someone in the crowd. Someone who is harder to face than all the other people in town combined. In the first few chapters we get to learn who that someone is and why is he persecuting Hester and her lover. However, we do not get to know for sure who her lover is until later in the novel – even though the hints Hawthorne gives us are pretty obvious. A novel about love, infidelity, hypocrisy, courage, and even demonic spirits (the reader will have to decide if it’s merely metaphorical), The Scarlet Letter is considered to be the most successful and noted literary work by Nathaniel Hawthorne. And in my opinion, it is one of the best novels in literature, considering the plot, the social and religious issues tackled, and most importantly, Hawthorne’s writing style which engages the readers and makes it hard for us to put the book down.
