‘We have declared before that it is not only expedient but necessary for a prince to take care his foundations be good, otherwise his fabric will be sure to fail.’ Considered one of the first works of modern philosophy, Machiavelli’s The Prince is an intense study on the nature of power and the course it should take when ruling a country and expresses the author’s strong and unyielding ideals and beliefs on using force rather than law to achieve your aims. Responsible for the widely-used phrase ‘Machiavellian’, with all of its negative connotations, his extreme treatise remains a classic text to this day.

Niccolò Machiavelli is an Italian author who is widely famous for his book, The Prince. The Prince was a very controversial book, especially during the time the manuscript was first discovered. That is because during that time, people held strong beliefs regarding ethics and its application in everything including politics, and Machiavelli’s book was straightforwardly advising politicians to disregard all that in order to win. The main idea of the book is how to be a good deceiver and manipulator to win the people’s trust and votes, and the ideas mentioned in his book are effectual and would make any one who applies them a very successful politician. Machiavelli dedicates each chapter for a certain advice. Machiavelli mentions in his book the certain virtues that would make that politician – or “Prince” – the perfect ruler. Those virtues should be adopted and practiced by the politician; however, if he does not possess them, he should pretend to have them. Meaning that regardless whether he actually has them or not, the people should “perceive” that he has them – that is the ultimate goal: to possess the ability to alter and play on the people’s perception however you like, because people matter the most, right? Machiavelli’s advice stretches o include that if, for any reason, the politician needed to abandon any of the virtues (for example, lie or kill), he should go ahead, but make sure the people do not detect a huge difference in the fake persona. Machiavelli then stresses the importance of appearing to possess some specific traits to maintain a good reputation, whether he has those qualities as well or not. One final advice for the politician is that he should only keep his word when it suits his purpose until he needs to be the opposite: it is important to maintain the illusion that the leader is still keeping his word even when he is not. The way I see it, Machiavelli’s The Prince is an exposé of how politics run in the real world. The most successful politicians around the world are the ones who can achieve as many advices from Machiavelli as possible. It is an easy-read since the translation is in simple English, really short, and the content is interesting. It is a one of its kind book that definitely must be read at some point in your life.
