Machiavelli’s words are as timely today as they were when he first wrote them, more than 500 years ago. One of the most famous philosophical and political tracts ever created, The Prince maintains its power, influencing people around the world and in all walks of life. This new highlighted edition makes it even easier to glean knowledge, inspiration, and practical strategies from Machiavelli’s masterwork: it features boldfaced phrases throughout that are especially relevant to today’s lifestyle. Also, each chapter concludes with a finishing thought and enough room for readers to make their own personal notes and deeper interpretations. An introduction provides details of Machiavelli’s eventful life, and examines his work in the context of the time he lived in. With The Prince as a guide, anyone can set off on the road to victory

Niccolò Machiavelli is an Italian author who is widely famous for his book, The Prince. The Prince was a very controversial book, especially during the time the manuscript was first discovered. That is because during that time, people held strong beliefs regarding ethics and its application in everything including politics, and Machiavelli’s book was straightforwardly advising politicians to disregard all that in order to win. The main idea of the book is how to be a good deceiver and manipulator to win the people’s trust and votes, and the ideas mentioned in his book are effectual and would make any one who applies them a very successful politician. Machiavelli dedicates each chapter for a certain advice. Machiavelli mentions in his book the certain virtues that would make that politician – or “Prince” – the perfect ruler. Those virtues should be adopted and practiced by the politician; however, if he does not possess them, he should pretend to have them. Meaning that regardless whether he actually has them or not, the people should “perceive” that he has them – that is the ultimate goal: to possess the ability to alter and play on the people’s perception however you like, because people matter the most, right? Machiavelli’s advice stretches o include that if, for any reason, the politician needed to abandon any of the virtues (for example, lie or kill), he should go ahead, but make sure the people do not detect a huge difference in the fake persona. Machiavelli then stresses the importance of appearing to possess some specific traits to maintain a good reputation, whether he has those qualities as well or not. One final advice for the politician is that he should only keep his word when it suits his purpose until he needs to be the opposite: it is important to maintain the illusion that the leader is still keeping his word even when he is not. The way I see it, Machiavelli’s The Prince is an exposé of how politics run in the real world. The most successful politicians around the world are the ones who can achieve as many advices from Machiavelli as possible. It is an easy-read since the translation is in simple English, really short, and the content is interesting. It is a one of its kind book that definitely must be read at some point in your life.
