Apple TV Remote

Remote

The primary input method for Apple TV is the remote, which brings the touch experience directly to the TV from across the living room. Creatively leverage the remote’s touch surface, accelerometer, and gyroscope to deliver a compelling and intuitive experience

Use your remote

  • Move around the screen: Swipe up, down, left, or right on the Touch surface.
  • Select an item: Press to click the Touch surface and use it as a button.
  • Return to the previous menu: Press the Menu button.
  • Return to the Home screen: Press the Home button.
  • Switch between apps quickly: Double press the Home button to see your recently used apps.

Gestures

The remote’s touch surface detects a variety of intuitive, single-finger gestures. Use them to build a physical sense of connection with your content.

Differentiate between click and tap, and avoid triggering actions on inadvertent taps. Clicking is a very intentional interaction, and is generally well-suited for pressing a button, confirming a selection, and initiating an action during gameplay. Tap gestures are fine for navigation or showing additional information, but keep in mind that the user may naturally rest a thumb on the remote, pick it up, move it around, or hand it to someone.

Avoid using standard gestures to perform nonstandard actions. Unless your app is a game in active gameplay, redefining the meaning of standard gestures leads to confusion and complexity.

Define new gestures only when it makes sense in your app. People are familiar with the standard gestures and don’t appreciate being forced to learn different ways to do the same thing. In games and other immersive apps, custom gestures can be a fun part of the experience. In other apps, it’s best to use standard gestures so extra effort isn’t needed to discover or remember them.

Where appropriate, use the tap gesture position to aid with navigation or gameplay. The remote can differentiate between up, down, left, and right tap gestures on the touch surface. Respond to positional taps only if it makes sense in the context of your app and if such behavior is intuitive and discoverable

Play content

To play or pause movies, shows, songs, and more, press  . You can also fast-forward, rewind, find special features, and more.

Move forward

  • Video: Swipe to the right or hold down the right side of the Touch surface.
  • Audio: Hold down the right side of the Touch surface to fast-forward. Click right to skip a selection.

Move bac

  • Video: Swipe to the left or hold down the left side of the Touch surface.
  • Audio: Hold down the left side of the Touch surface to rewind. Click left to restart a selection. To play the previous selection, click left twice.

Skip through video content

During playback, click the right side of the Touch surface to skip ten seconds ahead. Click left to skip back ten seconds.

See more settings and features

  • Video: Swipe down during playback, then swipe right to browse available options. If available, you’ll see settings like subtitles, closed captioning, video chapters, audio, and speaker settings.
  • Audio: Choose a song and press  to play it. Then click the Touch surface to see all of the tracks on the album or playlist. From here, swipe up and select  at the top of your screen. The options you see might vary.
